Lovely feedback is always welcome, even when it comes from unexpected sources such as experts you’ve interviewed.
It’s always a pleasure to receive good feedback and kind words from the editors I work with. But I had an unusual experience recently that I think was a first for me.
One of the types of healthcare content I write for specialist journals is profile pieces. I’ll interview an expert in a particular field and write an overview of their career. It’ll also include highlights and research studies they’re leading. Recently, I spoke with a brilliant respiratory consultant. He was very modest about his stellar career and the impact his research has had.
A few weeks after I’d filed, my editor dropped me an email with the subject line “lovely feedback”. She advised the team were delighted with a note they received from the consultant I’d chatted with. He told my editor he was very pleased with the profile on him. Adding that it’s “much better than I deserve”. He’s very humble as I mentioned earlier! My editor then said an additional thanks from her as my piece “really was a great read”. How nice and unexpected!
When I was chatting with a freelance business coach recently she asked how I take on board constructive feedback as some people find it especially hard to hear. I personally find it equally as helpful as positive feedback.
Constructive feedback is a-okay too
The excellent Freelancing with Tim has shared some great insight on this too. He advised writers that are open to feedback are ones editors will particularly want to continue working with. A very useful ‘good to know’ note from Tim.
